LVMH and Chanel inch forward in effort to limit Internet Sales in EU

Monday, July 27th, 2009

There’s a major battle going on right now in Europe that involves Louis Vuitton, Chanel & eBay.  The EU is trying to determine exactly how much control rights owners like LV & Chanel have over the distribution and sales of its products on the internet- and on eBay in particular.  Of course, brand owners would love total control- and I’m sure would love to see their things totally removed from eBay and the internet in general.

It’s funny how I actually agree with Bain & Co fashion industry analyst, Andrea Ciccoli when she said:

“Selective distribution, whether real or virtual, has always been fundamental for luxury brands… Not just anyone can sell products by Chanel and Prada in stores and there’s no reason why they should be able to on the Web. It would be like giving people a license to print money.”

I mean, part of what makes luxury companies so desirable is their exclusivity.  I get that.

But, more than ever, consumers are also interested in the investment and resale value of the luxury goods that they purchase.  How well an automobile keeps its value is more than ever a real concern and determining factor for buyers in which car they will buy. This is true for buyers of new cars as well as for automobiles on the secondary market.

There’s been a lot written this year about “investment bags”… and we see this here at Fashionphile.  The economy has turned South, so savvy shoppers more than ever are buying bags that will 1) pass the test of time and 2) will keep their value.  We often get asked which bags keep their value better than others.

Sure hope Karl will think about this in his next meeting with European Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes… his last meeting was said to have been instrumental in changing the initial draft of these new regulations in his favor.  Remember, earlier this year when he said that sales on the internet do not allow for “the unique feel and sophistication of luxury materials, refined tailoring and extraordinary attention to detail found in luxury fashion.”

To some extent this may be true- it’s difficult even for luxury companies themselves to mimic the “multi-sensory environment” that one experiences when shopping in a boutique.  But in today’s economy… many are willing to sacrifice a little of that in exchange for softer pricing and more than a season’s variety.

Lovin it! Straight out of Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood the Louis Vuitton store on 5th Ave in New York City shows the evolution of the Louis Vuitton Speedy.

From her birth in 1932 all the way to 2009, the Speedy is probably the most timeless bag, fit not only for Queen Saturday, but for you and me!!!

If you’re in the market for a Louis Vuitton Monogram or Limited Edition Speedy, be sure to check out our website www.fashionphile.com for all the sweet deals!!!

Wear What She’s Wearing: Latoya’s Louis Vuitton Sac Flanerie

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

I love that Latoya Jackson’s got cash to burn- but she’s rocking Louis Vuitton’s discontinued (for years) Sac Flanerie.  The poor girl’s in mourning, struggling with the press over her paid interview about whether or not Michael was murdered, and taking advantage of the huge PR bump she’s getting at the same time.  It’s gotta be rough… but she’s doing it in style!

The Louis Vuitton Sac Flanerie is an AMAZING bag, and I wish it were still around! It’s great for a carry-on, cause it’s got a nice long strap, so you can wear it over your shoulder (whereas the Louis Vuitton Keepall 45 duffle has handles- and require an extra shoulder strap…)

If you’re itching to get the same look for yourself- you can’t just head on down to your local boutique…   like I said- Louis Vuitton doesn’t sell this style anymore.  They’re hard to get hold of- especially in nice condition.  Luckily- you’ve come to the right place!  We have a vintage, but gorgeous authentic Louis Vuitton Sac Flanerie 45 right now on our www.fashionphile.com website!  Remember, Fashionphiles, “Used is the New, New!”  Be sure to check it out!

Of Motorcycles and Monogram Man Bags

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

Ah, love this!  Cause I love a guy who totally commits to his murse loving ways!  This is Gábor Talmácsi, the Hungarian 2007 250cc Motorcycle World Champion… and he’s way in touch with his man bag love!  Check the quote:

“I adore bags. When I see one fits me, I have to buy it without any hesitation. Usually I wear a ’shoulder’ bag as I don’t like have anything in my pockets. My mania has been noticed by the biggest company in bags as I got a beautiful bag from Louis Vuitton.”

Interesting, as he’s kind of insinuating that Louis Vuitton gifted him a bag- and their gifting policy is pretty hush, hush!  Still… he’s loving his Louis Vuitton Monogram Beaubourg.

Apparently, the HeStyle blogger who posted this quote finds the Beaubourg to be too feminine for a man to pull off.  I don’t see that at all, and think the Louis Vuitton Beaubourg is like a lot of Hollywood- it goes both ways!  What do you think?

Louis Vuitton Lunar Travel Trunk

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

Like a modern, metal Louis Vuitton damier easter egg!

Louis Vuitton came up with this custom job to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Apollo 11 landing on the moon on July 20th. It opens up all over the place with little nooks and crannies for basically anything you’d need for that luxurious lunar voyage!!!

Going to be in New York City near Central Park West this week?  Drop by the American Museum of Natural History’s Rose Center for Earth and Space on Monday where this little gem will be exhibited with other NASA goodies. The stars of Louis Vuitton’s new Journey’s spot- Buzz Aldrin, Jim Lovell and Sally Ride will be there and they’re bringing Daniel Lalonde, Louis Vuitton North America president and CEO along for the ride!!!  (Theirs was my FAVORITE of the Journey’s spots so far… can’t get enough!)

More Madge & Marc Behind the Scenes at Louis Vuitton

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

Ahhh, love these! Behind the Scenes with Madonna & Marc Jacobs for the Louis Vuitton Fall/Winter 2009/2010 ad campaign shot by Steven Meisel.

Funny, cause the “Bunny Ears” never said “French courtesan” or “French coquette” to me… but apparently, that’s what they’re saying to Marc.

Michael Jackson’s Glamorous Farewell

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

What can you say… MJ was a glamorous man.  So it seemed fitting when we heard about the entire Jackson family wearing Versace to the Memorial Service… in honor of Michael’s personal fav.  And when we heard about the funeral procession being “Sponsored by Range Rover”… well, Land Rover Encino, to be precise.

But my brother- and our web designer- Jesse was out by the restaurant where the family and close friends had brunch yesterday- and he noticed all the great bags being carried by all.  He had his trusty camera with him at the time, and snapped a few pics for me.  There was a lot of Louis Vuitton going on… a couple Damier Speedys, a Stephen Sprouse Heartbreak Joke bag, a Monogram Tulum, a Salina GM and more…

I thought Brooke Shields’ Hermes Kelly was perfect for this event.  Simple and understated…

Along with the Jacksons & Brooke… he saw Spike Lee, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Don King, and Louis Farrakhan…

Anyway… Michael was larger than life.  And his send-off here in LA matched that.

I’ll post more later- including Janet with her Hermes Medor clutch…

Gives new meaning to “man bag”

Monday, July 6th, 2009

Love this!  Good thing my hubby’s not famous!  I’d have soooo many great pictures like this one :)   As is, he ditches my bag when it’s picture-time.

Stick with the black leather bandaids…

Sunday, July 5th, 2009

Uh… yeah.  The black leather bandaids, I could see.  For those injured goth or rocker types.

Luxist wrote on the leather version, and I thought… “hmmm, interesting concept- and looks like they’re getting some press.” I mean, at our house, we’ve got “Camp Rock” bandaids, and Hello Kitty bandaids and Camo bandaids- but nobody’s doing cool bandaids for folks over 11.  What about white patent?  Or Leopard?  I think people might buy those…  But the whole unauthorized Louis Vuitton monogram version was a turn-off.
