LVMH and Chanel inch forward in effort to limit Internet Sales in EU

Monday, July 27th, 2009

There's a major battle going on right now in Europe that involves Louis Vuitton, Chanel & eBay.  The EU is trying to determine exactly how much control rights owners like LV & Chanel have over the distribution and sales of its products on the internet- and on eBay in particular.  Of course, brand owners would love total control- and I'm sure would love to see their things totally removed from eBay and the internet in general.

It's funny how I actually agree with Bain & Co fashion industry analyst, Andrea Ciccoli when she said:

"Selective distribution, whether real or virtual, has always been fundamental for luxury brands... Not just anyone can sell products by Chanel and Prada in stores and there's no reason why they should be able to on the Web. It would be like giving people a license to print money."

I mean, part of what makes luxury companies so desirable is their exclusivity.  I get that.

But, more than ever, consumers are also interested in the investment and resale value of the luxury goods that they purchase.  How well an automobile keeps its value is more than ever a real concern and determining factor for buyers in which car they will buy. This is true for buyers of new cars as well as for automobiles on the secondary market.

There's been a lot written this year about "investment bags"... and we see this here at Fashionphile.  The economy has turned South, so savvy shoppers more than ever are buying bags that will 1) pass the test of time and 2) will keep their value.  We often get asked which bags keep their value better than others.

Sure hope Karl will think about this in his next meeting with European Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes... his last meeting was said to have been instrumental in changing the initial draft of these new regulations in his favor.  Remember, earlier this year when he said that sales on the internet do not allow for “the unique feel and sophistication of luxury materials, refined tailoring and extraordinary attention to detail found in luxury fashion.”

To some extent this may be true- it's difficult even for luxury companies themselves to mimic the “multi-sensory environment” that one experiences when shopping in a boutique.  But in today's economy... many are willing to sacrifice a little of that in exchange for softer pricing and more than a season's variety.

What do you think?

EllesVMH: Louis Vuitton Celebrates International Women’s Day

Elles VMH

I love what LVMH is doing for International Women's Day (March 8).  They are exhibiting pictures of around 100 of their employees at the Avenue Montaigne headquarters.  The exhibition is called “EllesVMH” and the pics were shot by famed photographer Christophe Beauregard.

WWD reports that included are Judith Dahan (Dior Couture studio assistant ), Mireille Song (Louis Vuitton sales associate) and Sarah Tyler (pastry chef  from La Grande Epicerie).   On March 5 there will be a private preview.

Well, they sure quashed that rumor!  LVMH has released an official statement denying "any interest" in buying Coach.  So there you have it!

Louis Vuitton Christmas Tree

I'm so loving the creations for this year's "Les Sapins de Noël des Créateurs" charity auction in Paris.   Forty-four amazing Christmas trees were auctioned off for €101,000 towards building a house in Togo for children orphaned by AIDS.  The Louis Vuitton and Gucci are my favs... but the Chanel tree was pretty cool too.

Check them out!

Louis Vuitton Profits

Yeah.  We're literally in the middle of a global economic meltdown.  Banks failing.  Bankruptcy.  Bailouts.

But all those price increases must be doing some good!   LVMH recorded $12 billion in revenue for the first 9 months of 2008- putting them up 6% overall.   Their revenues actually increased third quarter (when it started getting really ugly for everyone else!)

Louis Vuitton in particular is up a whopping 12%.  This unbelievable growth largely due to the continuing popularity of traditional monogram and graphite damier and strong presence in emerging markets.

I love this quote from The Cut- (and don't say we haven't said this all along):

"So don't buy gold! Buy handbags."

Seriously... Go ahead and invest!

LVMH Brands Film 2008

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

I love this little film from Ogilvy.  It's a great visual of all of the LVMH brands (Louis Vuitton, Fendi, Celine, Donna Karan, Emilio Pucci, Givenchy, Kenzo, Loewe, Marc Jacobs to name a few!)But I was just noticing that we just happen to be currently selling authentic pre-owned versions of almost all of the Louis Vuitton pieces that they spotlight in the film. For example:  the Louis Vuitton Vernis HeartLouis Vuitton Vernis heartThe Manhattan PM that Catherine Deneuve's holding at the train station. And the amazing Empreinte Diamond Ring near the end.Empreinte Diamond Ring Louis VuittonI love that we have some of their favorites- and for a relative bargain!

 Fashionphile bags

We don't let anything like a pesky global economic downturn get in the way of us and our handbags!

So interesting that LVMH and Hermes posted record earnings this quarter, when everyone else is getting totally hosed.  Starbucks is closing doors left and right and Bennigans is shutting down completely but we're buying luxury bags and designer jewelry in record numbers!

We see that here at FASHIONPHILE.  It seems like people are needing cash- so we're getting a ton of consignments.  But, people also are into the luxury handbags that they've gotten used to when the times were fat- so they're still buying.  They just are willing to buy pre-owned to save a little money!

Louis Vuitton Blogger’s Breakfast

Louis Vuitton cake
(Cake not authorized by Louis Vuitton nor served to the bloggers at the little get together...)

Full disclosure here: I'm totally jealous, would have loved to have been invited, etc. etc. But, I'm also of course happy to give my two cents on it.

So, Louis Vuitton invites about 15 fashion bloggers- Bag Snob, Fashion Indie, Nitrolicious, Fashion Tribes, Fab Sugar, Haute Concept, Get Kempt, Gala Darling to a little get together to answer the question, “How do we work with you?”

It's soooo smart for LVHM to connect with these folks. I mean, they pay bloggers absolutely nothing- to write about what they (LVMH) happen to be selling. You can't buy that kind of publicity.

Or can you? I'm just hoping that it takes more than a little face to face with LV Brass, a couple croissants & a coffee or two to get some of our favorite "independent" fashion bloggers to lose their objectivity.

I was disappointed in this comment in response to the meeting from one of our favorite bag bloggers, Bag Snob:

"While you may be tempted by eBay and other unauthorized outlets, the only safe bet to ensure the authenticity of your LV bag is to purchase at an LV boutique."

;(

I mean, obviously another totally safe bet would be to buy a bag from www.eluxury.com, owned by LVMH.

And hey, there a ton of reputable consignment and resellers of Louis Vuitton both online and off. For sure, you have to be careful- there are thousands of ways to get scammed online. But, if you buy from a seller like us here at FASHIONPHILE, you really can be confident that #1) your bag is authentic and #2) if there are any problems whatsoever, we'll make it right.

As we've been told, we're "the best kept secret in Beverly Hills." If you're interested in an authentic vintage, limited edition or currently available authentic Louis Vuitton piece... you can not only pick that item up from us for sometimes hundreds of dollars below retail- but you can trust us!

Don't drink the Koolaid!

LVMH’s Bernard Arnault on the Chinese Boycott of Louis Vuitton

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

Louis Vuitton's Bernard Arnault
(Founder and Chief of LVMH, Bernard Arnault)

Apparently, Bernard Arnault isn't worried about the recent boycott of LVMH that's spread across cyber space through Chinese blogs, chat rooms and discussion forums. The Cyber Boycott includes not only Louis Vuitton handbags and accessories, but all 60 companies owned and operated by LVMH including Christian Dior, Tag Heuer, Fendi, Marc Jacobs, etc. So far, over 20 million people have signed online petitions to join the boycott. (Read more here: NYT)

China is Louis Vuitton's third largest market (behind Japan and the USA)... but Arnault said in Le Figaro, "The consequences for our company are very limited". (Read more here: Forbes)

Paris Olympic Torch Takedown
(Picture Credit: Patrick Kovarik for the New York Times)

The boycott stems from not only the little debacle as the Olympic torch worked its way through Paris, April 8 but general Western support of Tibet. Protesters for Human Rights and Tibetan freedom actually managed to extinguish the flame a few times in the scuffle.

Arnault actually said in response to the torch incident, "If we want to have dialogues with China, the Olympic torch should not have been a target of attacks when it passed Western cities... boycotting the Olympics is not a solution."
