Louis Vuitton Designing FIFA Worldcup Trophy Case

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

I know in my last post I blasted Louis Vuitton for designing cases for products outside their fashion expertise. But when FIFA decided to collaborate with them on providing the case for this year's cup trophy, I say design on. I am dying for the international event to begin June 11th of this year and I couldn't think of a better company to put in charge of protecting the most important trophy in the world than Louis Vuitton.

Big Surprise, Apple Monograms a Case for This Year’s Gadget… the iPad

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

I don't know if it's because the wound is still too open from Apple's recent stomping on its once most trusted fan and ally, the little guy, but I have to admit I am not a fan of this case. That almost seems impossible to imagine seeing that this is coming from an avid mac user since 2002. I am on my 4th mac computer, I have gone through 4 iPods, I'm on my second iPhone, and yes I snagged the iPad, which I love. What can I say... I'm an early adopter techno geek. What I don't love is Louis Vuitton's continual exploitation of the fleeting technological devices, whose size, function, style, and capabilities change just as often as they possibly can. I get it. I recognize that each year when that new gizmo comes out, the previous one that has completely satisfied me till the very second I became aware of the new one has utterly become obsolete. It becomes a burden to even look at. These guys bank it big time on maximizing our techno needs.

When I think of Louis Vuitton, I think of a brand that produces timeless pieces of designer luxury that transcend these concepts of fads. I think of classic photoshoots of Audrey Hepburn and her speedy. I think of Twiggy and her papillon. Those images could just as easily be used today and no one would suspect it from being old. To give you an idea of what I'm talking about here are just some of the cases that Louis Vuitton has created over the years, whose longevity lasted almost as long as the devices they protected:

Mythbusters Fire off a Leather Monogram Cannon

Friday, April 16th, 2010

mythbusters
Let's just hope the LVMH attorneys don't learn of this one or we just never know what they'd do. In this episode, the gang attempts to verify an old story of a lighter more mobile version of the iron cannon that was evidently made out of leather. And of course if they were going to be doing some fine craftsmanship with leather, they may as well go luxury. I won't spoil the ending but do you think it'll work? Sorry but the Discovery Channel's website doesn't allow embedding of their videos so click here to watch it on their site.

A lesson on fakes from Americas Next Top Model

Friday, April 9th, 2010

One lesson I learned early on in my marriage is that if I wanted to be able to watch all the sports I wanted, Id have to succumb to quality time with my wife watching Gossip Girl, The Bachelor slash Bachelorette, Dancing with the Stars, and Americas Next Top Model. As painful as these shows are to watch, sometimes theyll surprise you, like in the beginning of this clip from ANTM, with some helpful information.

Chanel Photoshop Disaster

Friday, March 26th, 2010

One of my favorite time wasters is Photoshop Disasters, where they expose graphic "artist's" mistakes in ads. It covers anything from the classic accidental omitting of a limb to distorted bodies that always makes you wonder, "One, how could the "professional" designer make that mistake, and two, how did no one else catch it before it went live?" Anyway, here's the latest from Chanel with an obvious cut an paste of the model on to a new background...Kind of looks like something my mom would do. No offense mom!?

Here's where they got the orignal: (see for yourself here and here)

Latest Louis Vuitton Rodeo dr. window display

Friday, March 19th, 2010

Today Louis Vuitton unveiled their latest window display, definitely not going down as their most creative design endeavor yet. Though I still do like to give all those who aren't from around here a glimpse of Rodeo. We share the alley way with them and it's always fun to watch them unload the huge boxes with custom ornaments each time they change their display. As you can tell this version, I guess the boxes werent so huge.

Heidi Montag copes with spending too much on surgery….and Birkins.

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Watch this "Funny-or-Die" produced, and none other than Ron Howard directed, video of Heidi Montag showing her kind of funny side. You really do have to hand it to her for finally trying to come off as uncharacteristically not pathetic.

Classying it up at the Apple Tablet Event

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

When I think if the hordes of people that make their annual pilgrimage to the Apple unveiling events, I usually imagine the kids recently dropped off by their moms, killing time playing with magic cards and discussing the latest strategy in World of Warcraft. While watching the live announcement today on Gizmodo, as an admitted Mac geek myself, I saw this image of this cute girl sporting her Louis Vuitton Watercolor Speedy. I'm glad she took this opportunity to class up the place. Via Gizmodo

Gucci Gives Back

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

guccisnowmanafrica

Love it when people and corporations do good with the resources they've got!

It looks like Frida Giannini- creative director for Gucci and author/ illustrator Michael Roberts have collaborated together in a campaign to benefit UNICEF.  They're putting together some original pieces designed by Giannini that will be exclusively sold in Gucci boutiques and on Gucci.com.

The facinating angle is that Giannini has commissioned Michael Roberts to actually write a sequel to his popular children's book- Snowman in Paradise. This book's called Snowman in Africa and don't try Amazon for your copy- it will only be available in Gucci stores and on Gucci.com until December 31, 2009. Generous Gucci is donating every penny you spend on the book to UNICEF.

But the fun part for bag lovers is that Giannini's incorporated Roberts' illustrations on two Gucci Joy bags, some charms, and other small pieces.  You'll also find the illustrations on special gift cards.  A full 25% of the retail price of each one of these exclusive pieces will be donated to UNICEF.  Over the 5 year campaign- Gucci's promised $7 million to UNICEF.

I love that!!!  I mean talk about win- win- win!  Buy an amazing bag, and help educate, supply healthcare and clean water to kids in Africa!!!  Can't wait to get shopping!

Leica M7 Film Camera – Hermes Edition

Friday, November 20th, 2009

As much as I love my digital Nikon D90, I cannot get over how unbelievably gorgeous this beautiful piece of luxury gadgetry is. This new Leica M7 Film Camera Hermes edition comes out this December, a perfect stocking stuffer if your normal stocking stuffers are around $14,000. If you don't think it's worth it, here's what you'd be missing out on via Gizmodo.

This very special limited edition of the M7 35mm camera comes in silver chrome with calfskin leather accents in two colors, orange and the mysteriously named "etoupe". The M7 includes a Leica SUMMILUX-M 35 mm f/1.4 ASPH. wide-angle lens, lens hood, LEICAVIT M winder and a matching carrying case. There aren't too many changes from the original M7, just a few cosmetic things mostly so the original styling doesn't clash with your new baby cow skin leather.
