Is a Louis Vuitton Montsouris GM backpack a “man bag”?

Kanye West Louis Vuitton Montsouris MM

Occasionally, I'll get emails that I think are really interesting or would be helpful to more of my readers... so I'll post the question and response here in my blog.

Dear fashionphile,

I've had an eye on the large Montsouris GM backpack in your store.  I really want the Christopher but can't find it.  Would a gm work on a man or is it too small.  Could I get a picture of it on a guy?

He's asking about the authentic pre-owned Louis Vuitton Montsouris GM backpack on our website.  And, I hear this quite a bit, because Louis Vuitton does so many sizes of backpack...

Kanye's wearing the Monogram Montsouris GM above... and the Louis Vuitton Monogram Christopher here:

And here's Kanye again with the Louis Vuitton Monogram Montsouris GM:

Allen Iverson carries a Louis Vuitton Monogram Montsouris GM as well:

It's a great sized bag for a man or a woman!  A bit smaller than the Christopher- but plenty roomy, and big enough to look right.  Don't get me wrong...

Size matters!  Here's my tiny daughter a few years ago, when she was like 4 years old... and she's wearing LV Mini Montsouris backpack:

Remember, you don't have to be the "Louis Vuitton Don" or play professional basketball to afford authentic Louis Vuitton.  The pre-owned authentic Louis Vuitton Montsouris GM backpack on our website is priced at $649- half off the $1300 retail price from the Louis Vuitton Boutique or eLuxury.  Check it out!!!

Louis Vuitton Monogram Pillow

So, I didn't want to post the pictures from the Vanity Fair party that Louis Vuitton hosted at the Rodeo Boutique, because other bloggers have done that.  But I did want to share this picture.

There's some comfy couches on the Rodeo Louis Vuitton rooftop, with some plain cushions... and also these cool almost monogram cushions (notice, no LV).

I got the picture from Anna Umemiya's Blog.  It's in Japanese, I believe, but she's got some nice pictures.  And what a beauty she is!

But anyway, I wanted to post it because I've get emails asking me whether Louis Vuitton has ever made (fill in the blank, lighters, visors, stepping stools, etc).  So, I've been asked through the years whether Louis Vuitton ever did bed sets or throw pillows, and I always answer no.  Exhibit A:

fake louis vuitton bedspread

I still haven't seen a bedset, but I guess I'll have to amend my answer about the throw pillows.  No, except...

 Vintage Louis Vuitton Wallet

I've been spotlighting especially good "Ask Seller a Question" emails that we've been asked by our buyers.  This is a good one.  It's one that we get quite a bit, and one that we read mis-information on in some of the guides that are floating around out there on the WWW.

Dear fashionphile,

I thought LV never stitched over the initials. I am not trying to second guess you I am just curious. Is it because it is vintage?

This is the back side of that wallet.  (You can see where the LV monogram referenced in the email has been stitched through...)

Louis Vuitton monogram wallet

It's true that the designers and creative forces dreaming up each Louis Vuitton piece are not only thoughtful in the the physical shape and practicality of each piece... but they are very particular about the way that the Louis Vuitton monogram aligns and is showcased in relation to that shape.

Take a look at the front of any Louis Vuitton monogram piece.  The placement of the monogram (the LV's, pointed fleurs and quatrefoils) is very deliberate.  The monogram is symetrical from left to right and often from top to bottom.

Not only that... but the pattern is obviously strategically laid out in such a way that seams, or cuts aren't made to go "through" the LVs in the monogram.

However, there are exceptions to this general rule.

1)  In small leather goods.  Like wallets, or pochettes- anything that is a small shape, and that uses one continual piece of monogram.  Sometimes, the size of the object doesn't allow for symetry on both sides.  And in fact, the size often requires a seam to "go through the LV's" in the monogram.  This will not be the case on the FRONT VIEW of the item.  So look at the front of the wallet, the front of the pochette- and you'll see no cut LVs.  The story is different on the back.

2)  In physical designs that aren't condusive.  For whatever reason, the physical shape of an object will require that the LV's be slightly cut through.  This is true, for example on many of the Elllipse styles and sizes.  Like this Louis Vuitton Ellipse MM:

Monogram Ellipse MM

3. In some vintage pieces.  For whatever reason, historically, this rule hasn't been as important with Louis Vuitton.  You'll find pieces all the way up through the 70's, 80's and 90's with seams through the LV's and can find hard cases and trunks that go back farther than that with the same effect.  Take a look at this piece of early 80's French Company for Louis Vuitton luggage- the corners of the front flap, in particular:

Vintage French Company Louis Vuitton Luggage

Anyway- what I'm saying here is that there is not a "hard and fast" rule about seams or cuts going through the monogram placement.  There's a general rule of symetry- but you have to keep in mind the intent of the design (symetry in the front view, may require a cut on the back, for example.)

 Louis Vuitton Denim Baggy PM

I got another brilliant question from one of our buyers about a Louis Vuitton Denim Baggy PM that we currently have listed.  It's a question that I've had before (and one that I've never seen accurately or thoroughly responded to elsewhere), and thought you all might be interested in.

Hi!
I noticed the Denim Baggy PM you had for sale back in March has the leather patch ABOVE the inner pocket, but this one is on the pocket. Which one is authentic? Thanks

Hey, trick question! :)   But a good one!

Here is a picture of the interior, leather patch and pocket of the bag that she's asking about:

Interior Louis Vuitton Denim Baggy PM

And here is a picture from a Louis Vuitton Denim Baggy PM from our Photophile (the database we keep on our fashionphile.com of our sold items):

Louis Vuitton Denim Baggy PM

As you can see (if you look carefully at the placement of both patches)... the Louis Vuitton Denim Baggy PM that we have currently listed on eBay has the leather patch on the pocket.  The Denim Baggy PM we sold earlier has the patch above the pocket.

So which is authentic?  They both are, of course :)

The deal is that when the Louis Vuitton Denim Baggy (PM & GM) came out in 2005, ALL of the bags (whether made in the USA or made in France) had the leather patch on the pocket... like the one in our live auction.

For whatever reason, beginning in about October of 2005- all of the French made (Made in France) bags began placing the leather patch above the pocket.  Since then- and at least through December of 2006- all of the French made Denim Baggys (usually FL, but also AS & TH date codes) will have the patch above the pocket.  All SD- made in USA bags will have the date code on the pocket.

Hope that helps!!!

And if you're in the market for a new baggy... The Baggy PM retails for $1380 and the GM for $1560 plus tax brand new.  We've got the fabulous PM listed above and two authentic Louis Vuitton Denim Baggy GM's on eBay for much, much less!!!

Louis Vuitton Cabas Piano

Again, I got a great question from one of our buyers- and it's one I've heard before in different forms, and so, I thought write a blog on the subject.

Here's the question:

Dear Fashionphile,

I was just wondering if the Cabas Piano with no seams on the bottom of the leather comes with the zippered pocket inside? I was looking through your photophile, and the one with seams had a zipper, and the one without seams had no zipper. I purchased one from you with no seams and a zipper.

Such a great question!!!

The Louis Vuitton Cabas Piano came out in 2000 (the Mezzo and Alto in 1999). When it was first released, the base looked like this:

Cabas Piano base 2000
(2000 Louis Vuitton Cabas Piano Base- with Seams)

The d-ring looked like this:

Louis Vuitton Cabas Piano D-Ring
(2000 Louis Vuitton Cabas Piano D-Ring with Rivet)

And the interior pocket looked like this:

Louis Vuitton Cabas Piano Pocket
(Louis Vuitton Cabas Piano- Interior Pocket with Zipper)

My how things have changed...

Today, the Louis Vuitton Cabas Piano base looks like this:

Louis Vuitton Cabas Piano Base- no seam
(2006 Cabas Piano Base, notice, no seams)

The Date Code is now located here:

Louis Vuitton Cabas Piano Date Code
(2006 Cabas Piano Date Code- on leather tab in slot pocket)

And the interior pocket and D-Ring look like this:

Louis Vuitton Cabas Piano Interior
(2006 Cabas Piano Interior- Notice, no zipper on slot pocket, and no Rivet on D-Ring)

OK, fine... so we now know that these changes have occurred throughout the years... But when exactly did these changes come about? And did they all happen at once?

Stay tuned... For the full run down on when exactly these changes came about with links and pictures!!!

Behind the Seams: Louis Vuitton Cabas Piano Pt 2

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

OK... So the Louis Vuitton Cabas Piano has change throughout the years- and you've just seen pictures of what the Cabas Piano looked like when it was first introduced- as well as pictures as it appears today, in June of 2008.

But those changes didn't all happen at once... and so I'm going to show you the order in which they came about.

From 2000- December of 2001, the Cabas Piano came with the seams on the base, the zipper pocket and the date code on a riveted d-ring.

(We have seen a few authentic bags with the date code representing a March, 2001 "Made in France" (VI) production, where there have been no seams on the base. There's no explanation for why the change occurred- but we've seen it several times. Here is an example: 2001 Cabas Piano, no seams)

In early 2002, French made ("Made in France"- with the date code VI mostly, also DU) Cabas bags dropped the rivet. They still have the seams on the base and zippered pocket. The date code is still on the d-ring tab, but there is no rivet. The American made, "Made in USA" Cabas bags continued to use the rivet. Here's an example:

2002 Made in France No Rivet

In January of 2004, the French made Cabas bags began to be constructed with the solid base. No seams. I have seen Made in USA bags where the base still has seams in early 2004, but the American bags were also quick to replace the seamed base with a solid leather one.

The Cabas bags still had the zippered pocket, and the date code was on the d-ring. (French bags still had no rivet, USA bags did).

Cabas Piano current base

In October of 2004, the Made in USA Cabas bags lost their rivet as well. At this point all Cabas bags had one solid leather base, zippered pockets, date code on the d-ring... but no rivets on the dring. This carried on until Spring 2005.

Cabas Piano 2005 no rivet USA

(February 2005 Cabas Piano- Made in USA- no rivet)

In Spring 2005 (about May), Louis Vuitton Cabas bags lost their zippered pockets. A new, slot pocket replaced the zipper. Instead of the date code being on the D-ring, it is now on a leather tab inside the slot pocket.

Notice that since 2007, the actual order of the numbers of the date code have changed... (read my Louis Vuitton date code guide for more historical and current date code information).

Hopefully you will find this information helpful in your quest to buy an authentic pre-owned Louis Vuitton Cabas Piano (from us- or anyone else!)

Louis Vuitton Looping MM

I've decided that whenever I get an "Ask Seller a Question" that I think might be helpful to others- I'll stick it on my blog. So here is another good one for the authentic pre-owned Louis Vuitton Looping MM that we have listed on eBay right now. Here's the question:

"Dear Fashionphile,

I'm having a very difficult time....two seemingly respected ebay sellers (one being you) are selling the same bag. One has a continuous piece of monogram canvas on the bottom of the bag, so that one side has upside down LV's. The other seller's bag has a seam on the bottom, with both sides having upright LV's. Both of you are guaranteeing authenticity. Please help me sort this out."

Here is the base of the Louis Vuitton Looping MM she is talking about:

Louis Vuitton Looping MM base- no seam

and here is the base of a different authentic pre-owned Louis Vuitton Looping MM that we have listed on our website:

Louis Vuitton Looping MM base-seam

Notice that the Looping MM in our eBay listing has no seam on the bottom, while the Looping MM on our website does.

When Louis Vuitton introduced the Looping in 1999, there was a seam on the bottom- like the second picture above. A lot of people like the seam, because this makes the LV monogram appear upright on each side of the bag.

Probably because it's less labor intensive, and doesn't effect the function of the bag- Louis Vuitton changed from the seam on the bottom to the unseamed base like the one in the top picture sometime in 2001.  (So that one side of the bag now has "upside-down" LVs.)

You'll notice that the date code of the un-seamed bag that the woman asked about on eBay ends in "3" (2003).

Louis Vuitton Looping MM date code

This is the date code of the bag with a seam:

Louis Vuitton Looping MM date code

The seamed bag ends with a "1" (2001).

A Louis Vuitton Looping bag with a seam will have a date code ending in a 1, 0, or 9 (2001, 2000, or 1999).

In early 2001, the French made (Made in France) Looping bags actually started coming with the one piece base. For whatever reason, the San Dimas USA factory was a little slower to switch to the new one piece bottom, so a Made in USA Looping won't have the one piece until 2002).

Basically, this means that a bag with a 2001 date code could have a seam or not, so definitely check other features for authentication. But the general rule is that a newer (than 2001) bag will have no seam, an older bag will have a seam.

***  The same rules apply with the Mini Looping and the Looping GM (Large).

Hope this was helpful!

Louis Vuitton Manhattan PM

A thoughtful eBayer asked this question about the fabulous pre-owned authentic Louis Vuitton Manhattan PM that we had listed on eBay last week.

Dear fashionphile,

This Manhattan Handbag is not an Authentic Louis Vuitton...the logos don't match up on the front. Compare it to picture of the Manhattan PM on eLuxury.

I thought this was a great question- and one that deserved a response on the blog.

And here is the picture from Eluxury that she is referring to:

Louis Vuitton Manhattan PM

Check out the pockets on the front... the monogram placement on those flaps, and below the gold-tone closure. Now compare that to the placement of the "LV"s in picture above of the authentic Louis Vuitton Manhattan PM that we sold last week.

Notice the centered "LV" between the handles on the eLux photo... it's much lower than the "LV" is on the bag that we listed.

There are other subtle differences between these two bags. The Elux bag has a longer canvas section above the pockets... Indeed, it is a taller bag in general, if you count the rows of toile monogram.

So what gives?

I have no idea why... could be that Louis Vuitton sometimes uses photos of the original prototypes in these pictures, or that they're trying to throw off counterfeiters, or that they're trying to make it harder for re-sellers. All I know is that there have always been pictoral and descriptive inconsistencies between the products produced by Louis Vuitton and the representation of those items on Eluxury or www.louisvuitton.com.

Uma Thurman Louis Vuitton

Notice the advertising spots Louis Vuitton put out of Uma Thurman with the Louis Vuitton Manhattan PM. (Looks a lot more like the picture of the bag we sold than the one pictured on Eluxury & vuitton.com).

Uma Thurman Louis Vuitton Manhattan PM

The Louis Vuitton Manhattan PM that Louis Vuitton makes, that you'll find at their boutiques, or at Saks/Neimans or on eLuxury, looks like the authentic Manhattan PM that we sold last week- and the one in the Uma pictures... not like what you'll find pictured on Louis Vuitton's websites.

I'll do more blog posts on other inconsistencies between items that you'll see on Louis Vuitton Le Catalogue, eLuxury and www.louisvuitton.com and what you'll find in the boutique.

(Just know this... if you bought it from us, it's authentic. We offer a 100% money back- plus shipping both ways- guarantee. You don't have to worry.)
