Gucci Gives Back

Love it when people and corporations do good with the resources they've got!

It looks like Frida Giannini- creative director for Gucci and author/ illustrator Michael Roberts have collaborated together in a campaign to benefit UNICEF.  They're putting together some original pieces designed by Giannini that will be exclusively sold in Gucci boutiques and on Gucci.com.

The facinating angle is that Giannini has commissioned Michael Roberts to actually write a sequel to his popular children's book- Snowman in Paradise. This book's called Snowman in Africa and don't try Amazon for your copy- it will only be available in Gucci stores and on Gucci.com until December 31, 2009. Generous Gucci is donating every penny you spend on the book to UNICEF.

But the fun part for bag lovers is that Giannini's incorporated Roberts' illustrations on two Gucci Joy bags, some charms, and other small pieces.  You'll also find the illustrations on special gift cards.  A full 25% of the retail price of each one of these exclusive pieces will be donated to UNICEF.  Over the 5 year campaign- Gucci's promised $7 million to UNICEF.

I love that!!!  I mean talk about win- win- win!  Buy an amazing bag, and help educate, supply healthcare and clean water to kids in Africa!!!  Can't wait to get shopping!

Un-believable!!!!  If you're in the area... do NOT miss this crazy auction where the government is trying to get back some $2 million in evaded taxes from shop-a-holic Susan Ellis.  Susan can't do much about it- cause she's presently serving time down in Kentucky!!!

auctionvernisbucket

It's tomorrow at Earl's Auction Co in Indianapolis.  I've only included pictures of some bags here... and Louis Vuitton bags at that.  But there are literally probably 100 or so- bags (Chanel, Gucci, Fendi, Ferragamo, etc!), and more wallets and small pieces.

auctionwallets

But I'm not talking cheap small accessories & pouches... a few different LV French Purse wallets (mono, damier, vernis), the Portefeuille chain wallet, etc. etc.!

AMAZING!  All in very good- to brand new condition.  It's craziness.  All different brands, and styles...

And tons and tons of clothes- I'm talking brand new with tags $5000+ Chanel jackets etc.  Like a hundred or so.  It's craziness, and I only wish I could have been part of it :(

If you go... PLEASE tell me how it went!  Check here to browse the AMAZING pictures- LOADS of them!!!

Louis Vuitton monogram bicycle trunk

Love the article today in the New York Times about the designer bike thing we've got going on right now.  You remember my blog post about the Chanel & Gucci bikes late last year?  Then of course we got that crazy fur laden contraption from Fendi a couple months ago...  Apparently bike riding is up almost 75% in NYC alone in the last few years.

My dad's been commuting to work on his bike since before I was born- long before it was cool.  So, I totally LOVED that the NYT included this amazing picture of LVMH North America Chairman Renaud Dutreil commuting through the streets of NYC on his Black Gazelle!

The whole thing reminded me of this old 1960's picture of a monogram Louis Vuitton bike trunk (above) that I saw a while ago.  Isn't this just the kind of thing you'd need if you were going to transport any one of these glamorous new bikes!

You've gotta check out the NYT article, cause there is a great photo gallery, including a close-up of the the Fendi bike, which you've gotta see!

Jean Charles de Castelbajac Logo Mania: Still Over It

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

I know I'm beating this dead horse- (and I hate that phrase- the poor horse!)-- but really.  "Fusion art"?  Come on now.

In case you've forgotten the formula (and how could you since literally EVERYONE is doing it...)

1.  Take one unexpected item- Gun, Bullet, Electric Chair, Statue of African Baby, Lollipop, piece of Classic Art

2.  Add internationally recognizable luxury brand signature monogram- LV, CC, GG, FF, YSL, Dior

3.  Find an Art Gallery- and open your exhibit!

Seriously, though.  Who isn't doing this? I guess luxury brands spend millions and millions of dollars promoting their brand's marks- so folks are going to do what they can to make a little money on it.

I love that I want to say "why would we care"... but obviously I'm blogging it... :)

Appropriating Arm Candy: It’s Lazy, Sucker!

Sucker Louis Vuitton Chanel Gucci YSL

It's getting boring blogging about "artists" who go the lazy route, and use designer logos and trademarks in their work.

I didn't even blog about the "Fashion Weapons" by still life photographer Massimo Gammacurta, because I'd blogged about so many other artists who've done exactly... the... same... thing.  You know, take something violent and offensive like an electric chair or a bullet or a creepy looking dog... and wrap it all up in Louis Vuitton monogram, or quilted Chanel, or signature Dior or whatever.  It's gotten so old.

But looks like the tactic worked for Massimo, cause now he's doing logos in candy.  Like I've always said, appropriation:  it's art for the lazy.

Louis Vuitton Christmas Tree

I'm so loving the creations for this year's "Les Sapins de Noël des Créateurs" charity auction in Paris.   Forty-four amazing Christmas trees were auctioned off for €101,000 towards building a house in Togo for children orphaned by AIDS.  The Louis Vuitton and Gucci are my favs... but the Chanel tree was pretty cool too.

Check them out!

Madonna Spring 2009 Louis Vuitton

While we're waiting for the release of the $10 million pics that she's done as the face of the Louis Vuitton Spring Summer 2009 Campaign, Madonna slipped us a preview.

And, once again- she grabbed the headlines with this fly-away feathery green creation from Louis Vuitton Spring 2009.  Proving once again, that it doesn't matter whether the buzz is positive or negative- the object of the game is that her name is still relevant.  Love that she had the guts to wear head to toe Louis Vuitton to the Gucci UNICEF Party!

Unfortunately, she's getting pretty much slammed across the board for this one.  Just checkout the headlines:

Madonna's Fashion Faux Pas-

Madonna Divorces Guy Richie Tomorrow After Showing Off Bizarre Grass Dress-

Madonna dons Gucci Shag Astro Turf-

Madonna's Hairy Green Dress is Actually Louis Vuitton-

All I can say is that (whether or not she's had work done) Madonna looks DANG good for a woman born in 1958.  I mean- look at her face in the picture above.  It's amazing- stunning!
